To address the individual needs of his patients, Northport Wellness Center Podiatrist, Dr. Steven Stummer, utilizes the following specialized treatments:

Digital Radiography

Digital x-rays are performed similarly to conventional x-rays, but use a special imaging detector that “reads” the body part rather than exposing it on film. This is the same technique used for regular digital cameras. Digital x-rays allow for faster results and delivery to other doctors, as the images can be viewed on a computer rather than having to send the actual film. The images can be rotated, enlarged, printed and emailed. This can make diagnosing small fractures or bone spurs easier.

Digital Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging procedures are a valuable diagnostic tool for a variety of medical conditions as they provide real time images of the inner organs. New technological advances have allowed for digital ultrasound scanners to be used which offer higher quality images. This improved quality allows doctors to use ultrasound to identify not only the presence of an abnormality but also what it actually is. Digital ultrasound scanners also process signals simultaneously, allowing for an increased frame rate. Dr.Gelwert is proud to offer the latest technology that allows for the most accurate diagnosis for his patients.

Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery is a minimally invasive pain treatment that targets irritated nerve endings with extremely cold temperatures. Dr. Stummer uses ultrasound images to guide liquid nitrogen through a cryoprobe to the infected tissue or affected nerve end. The tissue or nerve cannot survive the cold temperatures and is therefore destroyed or inactivated, relieving pain.
Cryosurgery is effective in treating pain caused by plantar fasciitis and neuromas. It has a shorter treatment and recovery time than surgical procedures and can easily be performed in the doctor’s office.

Computerized Gait and Pressure Analysis

The way we walk, referred to as a gait, along with our posture, can transfer pain to other areas of the body. It may be hard to relate this pain to foot problems through physical examination. A more detailed analysis may be required.
A computerized gait and pressure analysis can identify misalignment in the foot structure and other foot abnormalities. A computerized analysis often reveals abnormalities that may not be visible through a simple physical examination. After performing this safe and simple test, Dr. Stummer can determine the best possible treatment option to correct your specific foot problems.

Computerized Orthotic Scanning

Orthotics are customized shoe inserts that correct foot movements during movement and rest. They provide comfort and functionality for people with various foot, ankle, knee, hip and back conditions by either altering or protecting the foot. Custom orthotics are typically made by creating a cast of the foot out of plaster, which identifies any abnormalities in the structure of the foot. The orthotic is then designed to balance out these abnormalities and provide functional supports.

However, advances in technology now allow for an even more personalized and beneficial orthotic through computerized scanning. Computerized orthotic scanning provides a more thorough assessment of the patient’s foot and other important factors. Computerized scanning creates a map of the foot and takes into effect the weight, weight distribution and foot pressure of the patient, along with any foot abnormalities. A static analysis and dynamic analysis is performed. This information can help determine the best style, material and structure of each orthotic.

Computerized orthotic scanning also provides faster analysis and production times than a plaster cast. Patients can receive their orthotics and start enjoying the comfort and stability much quicker.

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ECSWT) is a new technology used to treat musculoskeletal conditions such as tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis and heel spurs. Originally used to treat kidney stones and other urologic conditions, ECSWT is now offered as an alternative treatment for foot conditions like chronic plantar fasciitis or tendonitis in patients who do not want surgery.

ECSWT delivers intense waves of energy through the skin to stimulate the healing process. This is done by inducing microtrauma to the area to initiate a healing response. Shockwave therapy can be delivered in both high-energy and low-energy forms. Improvement can be noticed within a few days, and full results are usually experienced after 2-3 months.

ECSWT is considered a safe and effective alternative to more invasive surgical procedures.
