Stress & Trauma Evaluation and Psychological Services
STEPS—Stress & Trauma Evaluation and Psychological Services—helps patients to realize their full potential with a strong belief in the unwavering ability of the human spirit to heal and grow after facing adversity.
Many types of stressful events can trigger a traumatic reaction, among them, natural disasters, domestic violence, non-consensual sexual contact, combat exposure, being a victim of a crime, vehicular and other accidents, grief, abuse from someone in a position of authority, immigration, chronic exposure to hardship, or witnessing a loved one get hurt.
It is a common misconception that if we don’t just “bounce back,” then there is something innately wrong with us. In fact, up to one-third of all people who experience trauma will develop PTSD in their lifetime. But while we cannot always choose the challenges and stressors that happen to us in our lives, but we can control how we react to them. We can decide to seek help, rather than suffer in silence.
STEPS was created with two missions in mind: helping individuals to realize their full potential after experiencing adversity, and encouraging communities to more openly and emphatically talk about trauma and its impacts. We also know that recovery is only possible where there is understanding and compassion, which integrates multiple methods of helping the mind and body to heal. True healing is only possible in an environment—and within a community—which provides safety, understanding, and non-judgmental acceptance.
