Concussion Recovery

Do you or a loved one suffer from a concussion?

A concussion is a type of brain injury that is caused when the brain collides with the skull following a severe impact or jolt to the head or body. Individuals of any age can suffer from a concussion. A concussion can occur in many ways—sports injuries, falls, vehicle and boating accidents, for example.

While some individuals with concussions have noticeable side effects, such as cuts and bruises, others show no visible signs or symptoms. Most people fully recover from a concussion with rest and decreased activity over the course of a few weeks. In some instances individuals who sustain concussions can develop post-concussive syndrome. This is a condition in which concussive symptoms can persist for months and sometimes even years without the proper treatment.

While concussions are quite common, they should not be left unmonitored or untreated. It’s important to be able to recognize signs or symptoms of a concussion.

Symptoms of a concussion may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Persistent headaches
  • Memory loss/confusion
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Lack of coordination
  • Poor balance
  • Irritability
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Depression
  • Extreme exhaustion
  • Posture And Body Balance
  • Head and Facial Problems
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Immune Dysfunction
  • Digestion Issues

If you are suffering from a concussion, your health care provider may suggest care that goes beyond time and rest. Your unique condition may require extensive evaluation, consistent monitoring, and specialized treatment in order to most effectively address symptoms that may not even be visible.

Comprehensive Evaluation for Concussion Recovery

The Northport Wellness Center Concussion Recovery Program offers medical imaging and advanced neurological testing to diagnose and determine the severity of your concussion. In many cases you will be evaluated by a board certified medical neurologist and in some cases testing such as CAT scans or MRI's may be ordered. In addition, we utilize computerized assessments of brain function to help demonstrate your baseline cognitive functioning including measuring reaction time, memory capacity, speed of mental processing and overall brain function. Additionally, should that individual sustain another concussion at a later date, we can use these results for comparison.

We have also now begun using this testing for healthy athletes who have not had any concussions. This way, should any of the individuals on the team develop a concussion, our testing can be be compared to their healthy baseline measurements. This allows us to have a very precise understanding of how that concussion is specifically affecting the individual.

With comprehensive and effective testing, your health care provider can best diagnose your condition and create a custom treatment and recovery program to ensure optimal results and success.

New medical evidence has shown that when a concussion occurs there is often some degree of trauma to the upper neck as well. Even without feeling neck pain, a concussion can cause the complex and delicate structures of the upper neck to become altered which can cause changes in nerve function and flow of cerebrospinal fluid. In all cases of concussion, our physicians assess the cervical spine (upper neck). By also gently correcting any issues with the upper neck we can help the concussion symptoms resolve more rapidly.
