Experiencing any type of back pain can be excruciatingly uncomfortable and inconvenient, too. The first step in addressing it is to identify the source, which will then help outline the proper treatment and care.
When it comes to lower left back pain in particular, there are several possible causes.
Some potential causes for lower back pain are:
Previous Injuries
Whether sports-related or from a motor vehicle accident, past physical trauma can haunt your current well-being by manifesting in muscle spasms or herniated discs, for instance. According to the nonprofit American Chiropractic Association, back pain is typically due to “mechanical or non-organic” causes, such as fractures, or even infections. There are other explanations, too, however.
Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Inflammation
The SI joint is located on either side of the spine, and helps support it. Without this joint, performing even simple physical activities, such as walking and running, would be near-impossible. As a result, SI joint inflammation can result in tenderness on both the lower left, and right sides of your back.
Kidney Problems
Although you may think your discomfort must have something to do with your muscles and/or joints, kidney issues—whether kidney stones, cancer, or a urinary tract infection—are actually other explanations, specifically for those with lower left back pain. The kidneys filter blood, help remove waste, and are situated just below the rib cage, against the back muscles on both sides of the spine.
According to an article published by MedicineNet.com, a digital healthcare media publishing company produced by doctors and a branch of WebMD, improperly working kidneys can create pain in the lower left or right side of your back.
While it may be difficult to distinguish between kidney pain and back pain/muscle issues, the article says to keep in mind “kidney pain is usually deeper and higher in the back located under the ribs while the muscle pain with common back injury tends to be lower in the back."
It’s important to consult with a trusted healthcare provider to determine the exact cause of your lower left back pain. This will help ensure you receive the proper treatment(s) and can begin the healing process.
