Detox, short for detoxification, involves the process of removing toxins from the body. Toxins have been known to both slow down metabolism and contribute to unhealthy symptoms and side effects.

The Detox Process

Benefits extend to both the mental and physical, and can include strengthening brain function, alleviating chronic fatigue, improving sleep patterns and concentration, as well as optimizing stomach and liver function, clearing the body of free radicals—thereby building up the immune system, and aiding blood circulation. 

The detoxification process can be accomplished through a variety of means, many of which include modifying the diet, adding vitamin supplements and herbal regimens, and eliminating damaging lifestyle choices, such as smoking, excessive drinking, and consumption of unhealthy foods lacking in essential nutrients. 


All Systems Go


Many detox plans use natural laxatives, diuretics, vitamins, minerals, teas, and incorporate foods thought to have detoxing properties. Substances classified as “toxins” can include everything from pollutants, synthetic chemicals, and heavy metals to processed foods. These can affect both brain and physical function, wreaking havoc on your mental and emotional state. 

When functioning at optimal capacity, the body is capable of naturally eliminating toxins from the liver, kidneys, digestive system, skin, and lungs. However, when toxins overrun these organs, natural detox pathways can become overburdened, leading to the manifestation of symptoms. 

To ensure this natural detox system remains in check, individuals can take action by limiting alcohol, making an effort to get an adequate amount of sleep, drinking more water, reducing the intake of sugar, salt and processed foods in favor of those rich in antioxidants and prebiotics, and increasing physical activity.


Long-Term Effects


Detox, when done safely and correctly, can lead to a consistent elevation in energy levels, reduction in inflammation as beneficial nutrients give support to the digestive system, promotion of healthy skin due to the removal of free radicals generated by environmental toxins, and strengthening of the immune system as a result of improved digestive and lymphatic function.
